Cannondale has been in business since 1971, founded by Joe Montgomery, according to Road Bike Action. Bags, panniers and the Bugger child trailer kept it going until its first aluminium bike came off the line in 1983. It filed for bankruptcy protection in 2003, and Dorel bought it in 2008.
