What's it worth? Valuing an old bike

How to put a fair value on a vintage bike from what similar bikes actually sold for, not what sellers are asking.

Before you startGeneral guidance, not a valuation. Prices change and every bike is different, so we don't quote prices here, and nothing on this page is financial advice. Check recent sold prices yourself before you buy or sell. See our terms.

There's no price list for old bikes. The best guide is what similar bikes have sold for recently. Asking prices show what sellers hope for; sold prices show what buyers actually paid. We don't quote prices on this site, because they depend on condition and demand, and one sale proves little.

1. Find sold prices on eBay

  1. Use Advanced SearchOn eBay UK, open Advanced Search, type the maker and model, and choose 'Completed listings' (eBay's help). Select sold items too, so you only see listings that found a buyer.
  2. Read the prices properlySold prices show in green. A crossed-out price with 'Best offer' underneath means the seller accepted a lower offer, so the bike sold for less than the figure shown (Crosslist).
  3. Mind the time limitPublic searches only show items sold in roughly the last 90 days (Crosslist). For a rarer model, search again over a few months and keep a note of what you find.
  4. On your phoneIn the eBay app, search, tap Filter, then Show More, and choose Sold Items (Crosslist).

2. Compare like with like

CheckWhy it matters
Model and versionBikes with the same name can be very different, for example a top model with Reynolds tubing and a cheaper one with plain steel. Check the frame, parts and transfers against its model page here.
ConditionA rideable bike and a project needing a full restoration aren't the same thing. Compare restored with restored and projects with projects.
OriginalityOriginal paint and parts matter to many buyers. See Original paint or respray?
Frame sizeNote the size of every sale you compare. A bike fits fewer riders at the extremes of the size range.
CompletenessMissing parts, especially hard-to-find ones, cost time and money to replace.
Postage or collectionCheck whether a price included delivery, and whether the sale was collection only.
Auction or Buy It NowAn auction shows what bidders paid on the day. A Buy It Now sale shows what one buyer accepted.

3. Other places to check

  • Ask in the For Sale / Swap / Wanted group what similar bikes have sold for. Asking prices there are a starting point, not proof.
  • Dealers' prices are asking prices too.
  • eBay's Product research tool for sellers covers the last three years of eBay sales data, according to eBay's help.

Common mistakes

  • Valuing a bike from asking prices.
  • Relying on a single sale.
  • Comparing a restored bike with a project, or a complete bike with a frameset.
  • Assuming the name alone makes it valuable. Check exactly which model and version it is first.
Insuring a valuable bikeAsk your insurer what evidence of value they accept before you need it.
